Building a soundstage inside a 2m³ cabin

Sound staging in cars inspired by concert hall acoustics

A concert hall is designed around sound. High ceilings, carefully angled walls, materials chosen to reflect and absorb at the right frequencies. Acoustic engineers spend years optimising a space so the audience perceives musicians exactly where they should be — in front, spread across a wide stage, with depth and presence.

A car cabin is roughly 2 metres wide, lined with glass, hard plastic, and foam. The speakers sit in doors, dashboards, and headliners. Not where an acoustic engineer would ever choose to place them. And the driver’s left ear is physically closer to one side than the other.

Sound Staging bridges that gap.

The goal is simple to describe and difficult to achieve: make the driver and passengers perceive a coherent, stable sound image, instruments positioned in front of them, spread at width, with a sense of space, regardless of where the speakers actually are or how asymmetric the cabin geometry is.

To do it, the DSP calculates and applies precise algorithms across every speaker in the vehicle. Tiny delays — fractions of a millisecond — compensate for the fact that some speakers are closer to your ears than others. Frequency adjustments compensate for the way the windscreen, headliner, and door panels each reflect and absorb sound differently. Level corrections ensure that what reaches both ears feels balanced, even when the physical setup is anything but.

Every one of those corrections is specific to that cabin. The same system tuned for one vehicle platform will sound wrong in a different one, because the geometry, the materials, and the speaker positions are different. This is why Sound Staging is not a feature you apply generically. It is engineered, measured, and calibrated for each program.
